Below are a couple of case studies describing customized training programs we have designed and delivered for clients.
U.S. Department of State
The U.S. State Department wanted to encourage employees at all levels of the organization to embrace a data-driven culture. They were looking to augment their existing internal training with a repeatable series of workshops for two different audiences: analytics producers and analytics consumers. We designed three customized courses to address their needs.
The first was a foundational data literacy course. This course equipped managers and executives with the ability to understand how to consume and process data presented to them, interpret analyses to better inform their decision-making, and create compelling data stories of their own to justify the need for resources and negotiate policy.
The second course focused on enhancing the skills of employees already familiar with working in spreadsheets, teaching them how to clean and manipulate raw data, apply analytic techniques to visualize complex data sets, solve optimization problems, and automate their analyses using Microsoft Excel and PowerBI.
The third course was designed to teach employees with more advanced technical abilities how to import, manipulate, and analyze data and perform data exploration, visualization, and modeling using the R statistical programming language.
Using this training program, we successfully taught hundreds of State Department employees how to process, analyze, interpret, and make decisions from their data.
The Brookings Institution
The Brookings Institution is a nonprofit public policy organization whose mission is to conduct in-depth research that leads to new ideas for solving problems facing society. They reached out looking for training on specific sets of data science topics that would assist them in their research efforts. We put together a customized training program consisting of a series of sessions covering the most pressing topics they needed to learn.
The program began with an introductory session on Web Scraping with Python. This session introduced participants to the fundamentals of web scraping and crawling workflows, sending HTTP requests, parsing HTML, and extracting data as well as the best Python libraries to use for each part of the workflow.
We followed this up with a series of sessions on Natural Language Processing and Text Analytics, where participants learned about creating corpora, preprocessing text data, statistical analysis, information extraction, text classification, and sentiment analysis.
The third course in the program was a primer on SQL and how it can integrate with other analytical tools such as Python, R, and Stata. Participants in this session received an overview of the SQL language and relational databases, a comparison of the different tools for working with data, and instruction on how to combine tools to process and analyze data more efficiently.
Finally, we also designed and delivered a more general Introduction to Python for Data Science course for them where participants learned the basics of programming in Python in addition to how to perform data wrangling, visualization, statistical modeling, and machine learning.
